Antique Victorian Washstand

SOLD

Code: 10146

This glorious antique Victorian washstand is a gorgeously decorative piece, composed of ebonised stand, basin and water bowl. The basin itself, with its inset soap dishes, and the accompanying large bowl for filling and emptying the basin are absolutely stunning pieces of glorious cream china with a magnificent transfer painted blue and cream apple design - named appropriately enough "Hereford".  The washstand was made during the nineteenth century when Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co. were by Appointment manufacturers of sanitary ware to the Britsh Crown - during the reign of the Queen Empress herself Victoria. Other members of the Royal Household including HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, herself a Russian Princess, commissioned her own range of sanitary ware from BWM.

One can imagine the washstand in the corner of a hallway or corridor of a beautifully interior-designed small hotel, or just standing looking beautiful and creating atmosphere in a vintage bedroom. Alternatively, the basin itself would look just fabulous sunk into a custom-made sink unit with Victorian style taps added, and the bowl standing nearby for added blue and white decor.

The basin comes with its original brass plug, and copper waste pipe and is offered in its original condition which increases its value as an Antique. The ebonised stand wobbles, there is water damage to the timber beneath the bowl, and one of the bowl handles is missing. If you would be interested in this piece restored, with the woodwork on the stand sanded and re-ebonised, and with the jug handle mended, please sing out and email us. The price quoted is for the piece Unrestored As Is. It is such a fabulous one-off and we are anxious for it to go to the right good home in whichever condition is required...
